January Blues
By James | Jan 29th, 2012 | Live Music |
January bluegrass is probably nearer the truth, actually (see the charmingly sharp Punch Brothers). Though there was blues, of a sort – foot-stomping, banjo-belting, deep-south country (the spirited, rootsy and unmodern Carolina Chocolate Drops) . And a heft of post-rock too (infallible, ear-melting masters Explosions in the Sky), which isn’t blues, but is definitely blue – and drenched all too often in unhelpful lights of that same hue. So it all counts.
2012 started at a gentle enough pace, and partially off-piste as far as taste and usual genres go, but turned out to be a pretty satisfying warm up for the year. None were easy shoots, but I got something out of each of them, so I suppose that’s good enough. See below for brief evidence of each:
- Punch Brothers @ Bush Hall, Shepherds Bush
- Carolina Chocolate Drops @ Cecil Sharp House, Camden
- Explosions in the Sky @ Brixton Academy
